The interior minister should be fired as a result of the government’s response to the Itaewon crush, according to a proposal passed by the South Korean parliament.

Following the tragedy on October 29 that resulted in 156 fatalities and 152 injuries, Lee Sang-min has been under increasing pressure to resign.

On Sunday, the proposal was approved by the assembly under opposition control.

However, it is widely anticipated that President Yoon Suk-yeol will reject requests for his minister to resign.

If the president rejects the move, the Democratic Party has threatened to have the minister impeached, according to News Agency.

The police in South Korea are under the control of the Interior Ministry, and they have come under fire for how they handled the situation in Itaewon, a prominent nightlife neighborhood in Seoul with winding streets and alleyways lined with clubs and restaurants.

For the first time since Covid’s founding, masses came to celebrate Halloween unrestricted when the crush occurred.

Yoon Hee-keun, the country’s police chief, said the emergency response was “inadequate” and vowed a full investigation over what had happened.

Lee Sang-min also apologized in the National Assembly, saying: “It is very sad for me as a father who has a son and daughter… it is difficult to express in words how unreal this situation is, and it is difficult to accept this situation.”
