After reportedly trying to take gifts from under Robert De Niro’s Christmas tree in New York City, a woman was detained.

At 02:45 (07:45 GMT) on Monday, police on the Upper East Side watched the woman enter the basement of his building; they later discovered evidence of a forced entry.

Authorities were familiar with her because of her multiple prior arrests for burglaries.

The 79-year-old actor heard the disturbance and went downstairs in his dressing gown.

De Niro’s representative stated that the actor was alright and had no further comment. He claimed that the alleged crime occurred at a house he was temporarily renting.

According to a New York police spokesperson, officers pursued the woman into the apartment where they allegedly spotted the suspected offender trying to stow away gifts from the tree in the living room.

Officers allegedly had no idea that the house belonged to De Niro.

According to a police spokesperson, the woman was facing charges, and the investigation was ongoing.
