Rishi Sunak said, it is “absolutely reasonable” for the UK government to look into Scottish changes that make it simpler for people to change their gender.
The Scottish Parliament agreed to eliminate the requirement for a medical diagnosis and decrease the age at which individuals can request to alter their legal gender to 16 years old.
However, this has led to a disagreement with the UK government, which is worried about the safety of women and children.
The Scottish administration under Nicola Sturgeon has stated that it will resist attempts to stop it.
The contentious self-identification system, which makes it simpler for people to obtain a gender recognition certification, was approved on Thursday by the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) by a vote of 86 to 39. (GRC).
By delaying Royal Assent, the process by which the King formally approves the Bill and it becomes an Act of the Scottish Parliament, the UK government might stop the legislation from becoming a law.
Additionally, it hasn’t ruled out filing a lawsuit. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak claimed that the bill worried a lot of people in Scotland.
While visiting a homeless shelter in London, he said: “I think it is completely reasonable for the UK government to have a look at it, understand what the consequences are for women and children’s safety in the rest of the UK, and then decide on what the appropriate course of action is.”
Scottish Secretary Alister Jack warned: “We will look closely at that, and also the ramifications for the 2010 Equality Act and other UK-wide legislation, in the coming weeks – up to and including a Section 35 order stopping the Bill going for Royal Assent if necessary.”
In accordance with UK law, the UK government may file a request to have Scottish laws invalidated on the grounds that they would clash with UK-wide equalities legislation. This ability has never been employed before.
The Scottish government, however, issued a warning, saying that any attempt by Westminster “to undermine the democratic will of the Scottish Parliament would be strongly resisted.”
