Winter weather alerts are in effect for more than 100 million people throughout the US, and this weekend’s snowfall is predicted to cause travel disruption.

Due to the storm, major airports have already cancelled flights.

According to experts, the cold spell might bring the coldest Christmas in decades.

By the end of this week, certain sections of the country might experience bone-chilling temperatures between -50F (-45C) and -70F, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The Arctic air mass is expected to descend as low as the US-Mexico border, where strong wind gusts will cause El Paso, Texas, to experience temperatures as low as 15F (-9.4C).

Even the Sunshine State of Florida is expected to see its coldest Christmas in thirty years.

As the storm approaches the Great Lakes region, where its pressure is anticipated to reach the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane, the NWS has referred to it as a “once-in-a-generation” winter weather event.

By Friday, the winter storm may develop into a “bomb cyclone,” a colloquial name for a specific kind of severe storm that is swiftly strengthening.

In addition to precipitation and strong gusts, the storm is also anticipated to bring damage and power outages to the Midwest and Canada.
