German man detained for allegedly passing intelligence to Russia
A German national has been detained on treason charges after being implicated in a plot to transfer information to Russia.
On Sunday, the FBI assisted in the arrest of the individual, who was only given the name Arthur E, at the airport in Munich.
He is apparently connected to a member of the German BND who was detained in December on suspicion of spying for Russia.
Arthur E doesn’t work for the intelligence services, according to the prosecution.
Instead, they think he provided intelligence to the Kremlin from his friend, an imprisoned BND officer known only as Carsten L due to privacy laws, making him an alleged accomplice to treason.
After travelling from the United States, Arthur E was detained when he returned to Germany.
It happens at a time when there are more worries than ever about Russian espionage in Europe as a result of the invasion of Ukraine in February.
In October, the media accused Germany’s head of cybersecurity of having connections to Russian intelligence services, leading to his dismissal.
The following month, a man who had been serving as a reserve officer for the German army was found guilty of providing information to Russian intelligence agents.
