A human skeleton was discovered Tuesday in an empty building on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, according to officials.

The university’s police department stated in a statement that it’s unclear how long the remains had been in the shuttered building on the Clark Kerr Campus, which is a residential hall complex and event space about a mile (1.61 kilometres) from the main campus.

According to the statement, there are no pending cases of missing people from the Berkeley campus community. “The building has been vacant for many years.”
The cause of death will be determined by the Alameda County coroner.

The university is located approximately ten miles (16.09 kilometres) from downtown San Francisco.
