Iran Protests: Two man killed over militiaman’s murder
For killing a member of the security forces during last year’s widespread anti-government rallies, two men were hanged in Iran.
In their appeals against their convictions, Mohammad Mahdi Karami and Seyed Mohammad Hosseini claimed they had been tortured into making false confessions.
James Cleverly, the UK’s foreign secretary, called the executions “abhorrent.”
Four protestors have now been executed in all as a result of the unrest, according to information.
Following the death in detention of a lady being held by morality police for reportedly wearing her hijab, or headscarf, “improperly,” protests against the ecclesiastical establishment erupted in September.
The two men, according to Iran’s judicial news agency Mizan, were the “primary perpetrators” in the death of paramilitary officer Ruhollah Ajamian. According to the prosecution, he was killed while naked by a group of people paying their condolences to a recently killed protester.
The guys first received death sentences in December 2022, but appeals were filed after they claimed to have been tortured.
On January 3, the sentence was affirmed by Iran’s Supreme Court.
Amnesty International, a human rights organisation, condemned the “fake” trial and claimed Iranian officials wanted to execute at least 26 more people.
The family of Mr. Karami, 22, claims they were not allowed to meet him prior to his death on Saturday. Additionally, they had begged the court to spare his life. His father pleaded with the judge to abrogate the capital penalty in his son’s case.
James Cleverly of the UK called on the Iranian government to “stop the brutality against its own people,” and the EU expressed its “appalling” disapproval of the execution of protestors.
According to the foreign-based Human Rights Activists’ News Agency, there have been at least 516 protesters killed throughout the disturbance to date, including 70 minors, and 19,262 additional people have been detained. 68 security personnel deaths have also been recorded.
Many of those who were imprisoned during protests reportedly suffered from torture, enforced disappearance, incommunicado incarceration, and other cruel treatment.
Iranian authorities refer to the demonstrations as “riots” and charge that outside forces are instigating the disturbance.
In the same case, 11 further men received prison sentences, while three other men received death sentences.
The most recent hangings come after two other individuals were executed last month for allegedly conspiring to attack security forces.
