Numerous more were hurt in the crash of two buses in central Senegal, which claimed the lives of 40 people.

According to officials, preliminary investigations indicate that one of the vehicles may have had a burst tire and hit another bus head-on.

Three days have been set aside for mourning by President Macky Sall, who also pledged to enhance traffic safety.

Senegal has many traffic accidents, but this was one of the bloodiest in recent memory.

87 people were hurt in the incident, which happened close to the central town of Kaffrine, according to emergency services official Cheikh Fall to news agency.

He stated that the injured have been transported to a hospital and a medical facility for treatment.

Confirming the 40 deaths, Mr Sall said on Twitter that he was “deeply saddened by the tragic road accident”.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”

Meanwhile, a bus tragedy in Kenya claimed the lives of 21 people and injured 49 more.

When the bus crashed, it had just crossed the border from Uganda into Kenya.

According to Rogers Taitika, a spokeswoman for the regional police in Uganda, the motorist looked to have lost control and went off the road.

He was quoted as adding that eight Ugandans were among the dead, who were largely Kenyans.
