A man who was repairing a telescopic public urinal in the heart of London was crushed and imprisoned underneath it in central London.

At the intersection of Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road, a rescue operation is underway.

According to the Met Police, the worker was critically hurt while working at the Cambridge Circus location.

At 13:05 GMT, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and air ambulance personnel were dispatched to the area.

The hydraulic urinal, a portable toilet that is brought to street level at night for use by passersby, has the man stuck behind it.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, members of our hazardous area response team (HART), members of our tactical response unit and a medic in a fast response car.

Around 25 firemen from the Soho, Euston, and Dowgate fire stations are on the scene with four fire engines.

The worker is believed to have suffered crush injuries while working on a telescopic urinal there, a Met Police spokesperson confirmed.

Cambridge Circus-accessible roads have been shut down.
