Massive earthquake hits Nepal killing one, tremors felt in India
At least one person has been killed and two others injured after an earthquake struck western Nepal, with authorities still searching for damage.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the 5.6-magnitude earthquake’s epicenter was in the hilly and isolated Bajura district, 400 kilometers (250 miles) west of Kathmandu.
The tremors were felt as far away as India’s capital New Delhi, where buildings briefly shook, at around 2:43 pm local time (08:58 GMT) on Tuesday.
“There was a significant tremor. There were a lot of people on the streets. “There was a terror for a while,” said Nain Rawal, a district official in Bajura.
According to district chief Pushkar Khadka, one woman was killed, two people were injured, and up to 40 houses were damaged.
“It’s challenging to obtain complete information because of how remote our region is. By tomorrow, we hope to have a complete picture of the losses and damages, Khadka said, adding that most of the mud- and stone-built homes in the affected villages were either completely destroyed or developed cracks.
Since many of the villages in the district are walkable, details were still hazy, but soldiers and police rescuers had already been sent, according to Khaki.
According to Deb Bahadur Rokaya, a village official from Gaumul, the deceased woman had climbed a hill to gather fodder when she was killed by a stone that fell after becoming loose due to the tremors.
Cattle and farm animals were also buried by the earthquake.
The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.9, according to Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center.
Indian users of social media reported experiencing strong tremors that rattled ceiling fans and other fixtures.
Nepal, which has the majority of the world’s highest peaks and is largely covered in mountains, experiences earthquakes frequently.
Another earthquake of magnitude 5.6 that struck Nepal’s western district of Doti in November claimed the lives of six people.
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the nation in April 2015 claimed the lives of nearly 9,000 people and destroyed more than 500,000 homes.
