The government of El Salvador reported on Monday that earthquakes had affected at least 130 homes and had placed over a dozen people in shelters.

From Sunday afternoon to Monday morning, 219 earthquakes were reported by the authorities.

Despite the fact that no fatalities have been reported, the tremors have destroyed homes and triggered at least 20 landslides, leading authorities to issue a red alert for communities in the Ahuachapan department, which is where the seismic activity is most intense.

According to Luis Amaya, director of El Salvador’s civil protection organization, “We are working on evaluating the houses in order to meet the population’s needs.”

According to experts from the civil protection, the worst earthquake occurred on Sunday at 5:07 p.m. in the municipality of San Lorenzo with a magnitude of 5.1 and a shallow depth of nine kilometers.

On Monday, public work crews came at the location to clear the rubble as local officials set up eight temporary shelters.
