UK Prime Minister Sunak dismisses party chairman Nadhim Zahawi
London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak removed Conservative Party chair Nadhim Zahawi from the government on Sunday, citing a major breach of the ministerial code discovered during an examination into his tax problems.
Sunak had appointed an independent adviser to probe Zahawi’s tax problems amid a period of political upheaval in the United Kingdom last year.
According to Zahawi, the British tax authorities determined that he had been “careless” with his filings but had not purposefully created an error in order to pay less tax.
“Following the completion of the Independent Adviser’s investigation, the findings of which he has disclosed with us both,” Sunak wrote to Zahawi.
“As a result, I have informed you of my decision to remove you from your position in His Majesty’s Government.” The independent adviser Laurie Magnus found that Zahawi had been misleading when he said that reports last July over his tax affairs were “clearly smears”.
Zahawi did not amend the record until last week when he stated that he and the authorities had struck an agreement.
“I consider that this delay in correcting an untrue public statement is inconsistent with the requirement for openness,” Magnus said in a letter to Sunak.
He went on to say that Zahawi had demonstrated “insufficient regard” for the duty “to be honest, open, and an outstanding leader via his own behavior.
” “Mr. Zahawi’s conduct as a Minister has fallen short of the high standards that you, as Prime Minister, rightfully expect of those who serve in your government,” he stated.
