A magnitude 5.6 earthquake that struck eastern Turkey has resulted in at least one fatality, numerous injuries, and the collapse of some damaged structures.

As the region recovers from prior devastating quakes that killed more than 50,000 people in southern Turkey and northwest Syria, Monday’s earthquake became the most significant tremor to shake the area in recent memory.

According to the nation’s disaster management agency (AFAD), the most recent earthquake was centered in the town of Yesilyurt in the Malatya province.

It added that one person was killed when a factory collapsed in Kahramanmaras, the epicenter of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the area on February 6, and 69 others were injured.

A father and daughter were trapped in a four-story structure that fell in Yesilyurt, according to the mayor, Mehmet Cinar, who spoke to media.

Cinar said that the two had entered the damaged structure to retrieve their stuff.

While rescue workers were attempting to contact his daughter inside the destroyed building, television images showed the father being transported on a stretcher into an ambulance.

Those who were staying in temporary camps after being uprooted by the earlier quakes, according to Teresa Bo, reporter of reputed media outlet, reported  from Gaziantep, also felt the earthquake.

“The earthquake was also felt here in the center of Gaziantep, right where those who have been affected by the earthquakes that happened on February 6 are living now inside tents. It generated fear and anguish once again,” Bo said.
