The total number of fatalities from the two powerful earthquakes has surpassed 7,200, according to government statistics.

According to the authorities, the earthquake in Syria claimed more than 1,800 lives while more than 5,400 people died in Turkey.

King Charles III expressed his sympathy to those affected by the earthquake that killed hundreds in Turkey and Syria in a statement delivered to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In a statement, the King wrote: “My wife and I have been most shocked and profoundly saddened by the news of the devastating earthquakes in South East Türkiye.

“I can only begin to imagine the scale of suffering and loss as a result of these dreadful tragedies and I particularly wanted to convey our deepest and most heartfelt sympathy to the families of all those who have lost their loved ones.”
