Germany: Russia pressure Syria into ensuring quake aid arrives
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has urged Russia to exert pressure on Syria to swiftly and unhinderedly permit the entry of humanitarian aid for earthquake victims.
“All international actors, including Russia, should exert their pressure on the Syrian regime to ensure humanitarian help for victims can arrive,” said Baerbock during a news conference in Berlin with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.
“It’s important that weapons are now set aside and all efforts in the region are focused on humanitarian aid and on recovering and protecting victims,” said Baerbock, adding that every minute counted.
Although the Syrian government has always insisted that all humanitarian help be channelled through it, some of the Syrian regions hit by the earthquake are under the control of opposition groups.
According to Adelheid Marschang, a WHO Senior Emergency Officer, the earthquake in Syria was “a crisis on top of numerous crises,” and the country urgently needed assistance.
