Snowfall has hampered daily life in several parts of India’s Himalayan states.

A thick covering of snow blanketed most of India’s legally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, cutting power supply and causing delays in road, rail, and air traffic.

Avalanche alerts have been issued for ten districts in the region.

The iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar’s main city has partially frozen, with snow covering the famous shikhara or houseboats.

The rain also hampered the travel plans of numerous Congress party leaders, who were in the region as part of their 4,000km (2,485-mile) “unity march” across India, which concluded on Monday in Kashmir.

On Tuesday, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh tweeted that several MPs would be unable to attend the budget session in parliament due to the cancellation of all flights from Srinagar due to severe weather.

Authorities in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh closed some vital highways and roads after heavy snowfall disrupted daily living.

A similar situation existed in the neighboring state of Uttarakhand, where travel on major national routes was interrupted for hours on Tuesday due to snow accumulation.

The meteorological service predicts that conditions will improve beginning Wednesday morning.
