Oman, a country in the Persian Gulf, has officially opened its airspace to all airlines that comply with its rules for civil aviation, allowing Israeli airlines to fly over it.

Eli Cohen, the foreign minister of Israel, congratulated Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said on Thursday for making the choice that will speed up flights to Asia.

“It’s an historic and significant decision for the Israeli economy and the Israeli traveler,” Cohen said.

Israeli airlines were able to travel to Asia last year thanks to Saudi Arabia’s permission, but they were unable to do so because Omani airspace was shut off.

Following US President Joseph Biden’s trip to the area last year, Saudi Arabia made its decision.

There will be a reduction of at least two hours in flight time from Israel to Asian locations like Thailand and India.

Despite the lack of formal ties between Oman and Israel, the Gulf nation was less hesitant to promote its ties with Israel.

In 2018, Netanyahu was welcomed in Muscat by the late Sultan Qaboos.

The UAE and Bahrain established diplomatic ties with Israel in 2020, and Oman was one of the first nations to congratulate them.
