Despite the warnings, due to Vienna’s school vacations, ski slopes in western Austria have been crowded.

On Sunday, the Austrian police reported five fatalities, including a 59-year-old man who was operating a snow plough in Tyrol’s western region.

A ski instructor in Sankt Anton am Arlberg and a 62-year-old man who was cross-country skiing around Hohe Aifner’s top were also found dead there.

A 17-year-old New Zealander, a 32-year-old Chinese national, and a 50-year-old German guy who were allegedly skiing off of marked ski tracks when avalanches struck were also discovered dead on Saturday.

In Switzerland, on Saturday morning, unstable snow in the Graubuenden canton’s southeast region claimed the lives of a 56-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man. A third person in their group, according to Swiss authorities, was able to flee safely.

Avalanches frequently occur in both nations. Thirty avalanches were reported in the Tyrol region alone on Saturday, with 11 of them involving humans, according to Austria’s news agency.

According to Austria’s level four alert level, “extremely significant avalanches are likely,” and it urges both experienced and novice skiers to avoid very steep terrain by staying on open ski lines and trails.
