Joe Biden, the vice president of the United States, paid a surprise visit to Ukraine early on Monday. This was his first visit to the nation since Russia’s invasion started almost a year ago.

At a time when the war is at its most tenuous, as Moscow gets ready for what is anticipated to be a spring attack, Biden’s visit is a sign of support for Kyiv.

Years ago, US President Joe Biden was called to Kyiv by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who felt it was crucial for him to witness the situation firsthand.

Zelenskyy claimed his invitation for Biden to visit Ukraine remained open as recently as last week.

“President Biden and I meet occasionally. You know that we have invited the President. I think he will be happy to visit Ukraine if he has the opportunity. That would be an important signal to support our nation,” Zelenskyy said on February 15.

Zelenskyy made his first trip outside of Ukraine since the war started in December, when he went to Washington to meet Biden in the Oval Office and address a joint session of Congress.
