More than 400 rebels were given life sentences by a Chadian court on Tuesday for the murder of former President Idriss Déby.

Following skirmishes with separatists in the country’s north, the former president passed away from his wounds in April 2021.

After more than three decades in office, he was among the presidents in Africa with the longest terms in office.

The 465 members of the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT) rebel group began their collective trial in secret in the capital N’Djamena in February.

In addition to other counts, they were found guilty of terrorism, undermining national security, and putting the life of the head of state in jeopardy.

The group has called the trials “masquerades” with flaws.
