Hamza Yousaf to use snap Holyrood vote to secure independence
As part of a plan to win independence, Humza Yousaf has stated he would think about holding a hastily called election for the Parliament.
The SNP leadership candidate further denied claims that he was only running for continuity.
Also, he said on The Sunday Program that if Kate Forbes won the election, he would need guarantees before joining her cabinet.
The finance secretary, Ms. Forbes, and former minister of community safety Ash Regan are up against the health secretary in the election.
On Monday, SNP members will begin casting their votes for the new leader, with the results being disclosed on March 27.
Several party figures, including the SNP‘s Westminster leader Stephen Flynn and deputy first minister John Swinney, have endorsed Mr. Yousaf.
The possibility of an early Scottish election “to test the people will, when we believe we have that consistent majority support for independence” was mentioned in a piece in The National, which Mr. Yousaf was questioned about on Sunday.
The Glasgow Pollok MSP told the Media: “We will take any measures required to gain independence that are, of course, within the bounds of the law.”
He also emphasized that rather than focusing on “procedure,” his first aim was to create a strong base of support for independence.
Questioned about what would justify calling a snap election, Mr. Yousaf said: “It would be about demonstrating that we have a consistent majority for independence. We don’t have that at the moment.
“This week is a perfect example. We have seen one poll that puts support for independence below 50% and, literally a day later, support above 50% in another poll. We can’t have that fluctuation.”
In order to “empower our membership,” he also promised to set up regional assemblies in his first week in office.
As a poll revealed that one in five Scots had paid for treatment in the previous 12 months, Mr. Yousaf defended his performance as health secretary. According to him, neither his family nor he had ever used private healthcare.
