A well-known broadcaster and political activist in Mali has been imprisoned for claiming that a former prime minister who passed away in prison last year was murdered.

Mohamed Youssouf Bathily, a well-known radio and television personality known as Ras Bath, is accused of disturbing the peace.

At a political gathering on Saturday, he made the remarks on the late prime minister, Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga.

Videos of his remarks have been widely disseminated online.

There have been calls for the military administration of Mali to permit an investigation into Mr. Maiga’s passing.

He was a supporter of the ousted president Ibrahimm Boubacar Keita, who served for three years.
