Two males have been taken into custody by police who are looking into the attempted murder of Det Ch Insp John Caldwell last week.

Both men were held under the Terrorism Act: a 33-year-old man was apprehended in Omagh and a 57-year-old man was detained in Belfast.

They were brought to the Musgrave Major Crime Suite for interrogation.

As a result of the gunshot that occurred on February 22 in the parking lot of an Omagh sports complex, Mr. Caldwell is still in critical but stable condition.

Two other men, 47 and 71 years old, who were detained in connection with the attempted murder are still being held.

More time has been given to the officers so they can question them.

Tuesday night saw the release of four more men.

The shooting in the County Tyrone town occurred as Mr. Caldwell was attending a juvenile sporting event, according to the dissident republican group the New IRA.

According to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), two shooters opened fire on the officer with 10 shots as he was loading footballs into the trunk of his vehicle.

At least two other vehicles were shot at at the time, and his son was among the kids present, according to the police.
