Spain wants to discuss Russia’s war on Ukraine with Xi Jinping
During a state visit to China the following week, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez says he would speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping about Russia’s conflict with Ukraine.
Sánchez stated he will speak with Xi about three subjects:
The territorial integrity of Ukraine and the subject of peace on Kyiv’s terms will be directly addressed, according to Sanchez.
“That means respecting the UN human rights charter, with regards to the territorial integrity which is being violated by Russia, in this case in Ukraine,” he told reporters as he arrived for a European Council meeting in Brussels. “And logically it will be Ukrainians themselves who establish the conditions for the beginning of that peace dialogue that will logically have to occur.”
On Thursday, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it has no information to share on the subject.
The Spanish prime minister said he was thankful for President Xi’s invitation and referred to China as “a global actor of the first order,” adding it was important to hear Beijing’s view.
Despite its expanding connection with Russia, Beijing has made an effort to portray itself as a peacemaker in the issue.
During a three-day state visit, Xi promised to strengthen ties with President Vladimir Putin and left Moscow on Wednesday.
With regard to Ukraine, their discussions fell short of success.
