In what appears to have been a shark attack, a woman was killed at a beach resort on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

The woman, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was discovered dead by emergency personnel on Saturday at the location in Melaque Bay, Cihuatlán municipality, as per a Facebook statement released by the local fire and civil protection agencies.

The statement stated that the victim had suffered a significant leg injury that seemed to be the result of a shark attack.

The tragedy happened on the same day as a swimming competition in the bay, which is situated in the western Mexican state of Jalisco.

According to a separate announcement from the service, local beaches will stay closed until further notice. Volunteers are on patrol, advising people to avoid the sea.

Additionally, the Cihuatlán municipal authority issued a Facebook statement cautioning people against visiting the area’s beaches.

“Our priority is to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of every citizen,” the statement reads.

In a Facebook statement, the local administration of La Huerta, which lies nearby, also alerted residents of “the presence of a shark on the southern coast of Jalisco.”
