Donald Trump threatens BBC with legal action over misleading documentary
The BBC has confirmed receiving a legal threat from former U.S. President Donald Trump over an edited documentary aired shortly before the American presidential election.
According to BBC News, Trump’s legal team sent a formal notice objecting to the documentary, which allegedly combined two separate parts of his speech. The edit made it appear as if Trump had encouraged the January 6, 2021, Capitol Hill riots.
The BBC admitted that the editing gave a misleading impression and stated that the issue should have been handled more carefully.
BBC Chairman Samir Shah confirmed in an interview that the organization had received a legal notice from Trump’s team and was reviewing its response. He added that it remains unclear whether Trump will actually file a lawsuit, but the broadcaster is preparing for all possibilities.
Trump, who is once again campaigning for the U.S. presidency, has repeatedly accused the media of biased coverage and taken a tough stance against several international outlets.
