NEW DELHI: A powerful explosion near the Red Fort Metro Station in India’s capital on Sunday killed 12 people and injured dozens more, according to local media reports.

The blast occurred near Gate No. 1 of the metro station, setting nearby vehicles on fire. Flames quickly spread, burning several cars completely, witnesses said.

A spokesperson for the Delhi Fire Department confirmed that three to four vehicles were destroyed, and several fire brigade teams rushed to the scene to control the blaze and rescue victims.

Eyewitnesses described the explosion as “massive,” saying the shockwave shattered nearby windows and caused panic among shopkeepers and passersby, many of whom ran for safety.

Authorities have temporarily closed the Red Fort Metro Station, suspending train services in the area. Senior Delhi Police officers and a bomb disposal squad have sealed off the site and begun an investigation.
