Pakistan’s weather authority has issued a heatwave alert, forecasting a significant rise in temperatures across the country. A high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere is expected to cause heatwave conditions, especially in Punjab and Sindh, starting on May 21st. The heatwave is anticipated to peak from May 23rd to 27th.

Temperature Surge Expected

Daytime temperatures in Sindh and Punjab are predicted to be 4 to 6°C above normal from May 21st to 23rd, increasing to 6 to 8°C above normal from May 23rd to 27th. Similar temperature rises of 4 to 6°C above normal are expected in Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Balochistan from May 21st to 27th.

Weather Changes from May 16th

A shallow westerly wave is set to affect the upper regions of the country on the evening of May 16th, bringing the following weather changes:

  • Balochistan: Dust storms and isolated rain are expected in various districts from the evening of May 16th to May 19th.
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Dust storms and isolated rain are forecasted in several areas from the evening of May 16th to May 19th.
  • Gilgit-Baltistan/Kashmir: Rain, wind, and thunderstorms are predicted from the evening of May 16th to May 19th.
  • Punjab/Islamabad: Dust storms and isolated rain are expected from the evening of May 16th to May 18th.
  • Sindh: Dust storms and isolated rain are forecasted for May 17th and 18th.
