Pakistani actress Mariyam Nafees has sparked an important conversation about gender equality and safety in a recent podcast. She expressed concern that women often feel unsafe and are “restricted from going out because of them,” pointing to the broader issue of societal attitudes towards gender.

Nafees argued for equal treatment of sons and daughters, stating, “If daughters are told to come home till sunset, then the same should be the rule for sons.” She highlighted the disparity in freedom between genders, noting that the birth of a son is celebrated with the notion that “the son is free, he can roam anywhere like a wild ox,” while daughters face restrictions. “But why can’t daughters have the same freedom?” she questioned.

Addressing a host’s comment about the potential for Karachi to be deserted if such rules were applied, Nafees replied, “At least it will be safe.” She also criticized the current upbringing of sons, saying, “You’re training your daughters very well to cook and pray, but what are you teaching your sons?” Her comments challenge societal norms and call for a reevaluation of gender roles to ensure safety and equality for everyone.
