Saudi Arabia is gearing up to unveil the first phase of the Riyadh Metro, the world’s longest driverless metro system, on Wednesday, November 27.

Part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative, the high-tech metro aims to modernize infrastructure, reduce car dependency, and position Riyadh as a global trade and business hub.

The initial phase will operate on three of the six planned lines, connecting key roads such as Al Orouba and Batha, King Khalid International Airport Road, and Abdulrahman Bin Auf Street with Sheikh Hassan Bin Hussein Street. By mid-December, the remaining lines will open, covering areas including King Abdullah Road, Al Madina, and King Abdulaziz Road.

The $22.5 billion project, approved in 2012, faced delays due to logistical challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, its launch marks a significant step in transforming public transportation in Riyadh. The metro is expected to ease the city’s notorious traffic congestion and reduce car dependency.

Sustainability is a key aspect of the project, with plans to install solar panels at stations to generate 20% of the energy needed for essential systems, ensuring all six lines operate entirely on renewable energy.

Authorities are set to announce ticket prices and special discount packages soon, highlighting this project’s role in fostering smart cities, sustainable transport, and improved living standards in Saudi Arabia.
