Register Your VPN Using Mobile Numbers: Here’s How
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced that individuals without static IP addresses can now register virtual private networks (VPNs) using their mobile numbers.
This move is aimed at simplifying the VPN registration process to better support the IT sector, with over 31,000 VPNs already registered, according to the PTA.
The authority has encouraged users to register their VPNs through its official website. This announcement comes after PTA’s earlier decision to launch a crackdown on unregistered VPNs due to security concerns raised by the government.
Initially, the PTA set a deadline of November 30 for VPN registration but later decided not to block unregistered VPNs, indicating an extension of the registration period.
The Ministry of Interior had previously planned to shut down all unregistered VPNs by mid-November but offered a two-week grace period to allow users to comply with the registration requirements.
The rise in VPN usage in Pakistan can be attributed to the ban on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) earlier this year, due to “national security” concerns. VPNs are widely used around the world to bypass content restrictions and enhance data security.
To register a VPN, individuals must fill out an online form providing essential information, including their computerized national identity card (CNIC), company registration details, and taxpayer status.
Freelancers are also required to submit supporting documents, such as a letter or email confirming their affiliation with a project or company. Additionally, applicants need to specify the IP address required for VPN connectivity. If a fixed IP address is necessary, it can be obtained from an Internet Service Provider (ISP).
