Washington: The Trump administration has proposed significant changes to U.S. visa policy, aiming to limit the duration of stay for foreign students, journalists, and other temporary visitors.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced the measures as part of an effort to curb what it calls “visa misuse” and close loopholes in the current system.

Under the new proposal, international students would face a strict maximum stay of four years, ending the decades-long policy that allowed students to remain in the U.S. for the duration of their studies. This exemption has been in place since 1978. DHS officials argue that some students have taken advantage of the open-ended system to remain in the country indefinitely.

Foreign media representatives, including journalists from allied nations like Israel, would be issued visas for an initial period of 240 days, with a possible extension. The new rule would also affect researchers and foreign medical professionals.

In addition to time limits, both students and journalists would be subject to regular screening to ensure compliance with visa conditions. The administration says the goal is to “strengthen national security and immigration integrity.”

The proposal has drawn concern from academic institutions, press freedom advocates, and international organizations, who argue that the restrictions could hurt U.S. global influence and innovation.

The rule is currently in the proposal stage and will undergo a public comment period before it can be enacted.
