Federal Govt announces Rs334 billion mega projects for Karachi
KARACHI: The spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Barrister Raja Khaliq uz Zaman Ansari, announced on Wednesday that the federal government will launch 22 mega projects in Karachi worth Rs334 billion. These projects will be carried out in partnership with the Sindh government and the city’s mayor.
Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, Ansari accused Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab of stopping the ongoing Green Line expansion project. He said the federal government had committed to completing the project along with the Sindh government and the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).
According to him, nearly 42,000 people use the Green Line every day. The first 21-kilometer corridor has already been completed, and construction on the second phase from Gurumandir to Municipal Park Saddar has also started. However, Ansari claimed the mayor halted the work without explanation, causing heavy financial losses.
“If we are allowed to continue, the Green Line expansion will be completed by June next year,” he said.
Ansari also shared details of the upcoming Rs334 billion projects. These include linking traffic from Numaish to Municipal Park, connecting the Red, Yellow, and Blue Lines with the Green Line, upgrading the Karachi Water Filter Plant, reviving the Karachi Circular Railway by connecting it to the port railway network, and modernizing Karachi Cantt Station with a digital model.
He urged the mayor not to block development work, stressing that these projects aim to improve the lives of Karachi’s people and the wider province, not serve political interests.
Ansari added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will visit Karachi in December to inaugurate the mega projects. During his visit, the government will also distribute 200,000 laptops to students at an event at Mazar-e-Quaid.
