PARIS: France is planning a new measure to protect children from excessive screen time, proposing a ban on social media access for children under 15 by September 2026, according to a draft law.
The initiative has the support of President Emmanuel Macron, who recently urged parliament to begin debating the proposal in January.
The draft highlights concerns over the risks of excessive digital screen use among adolescents, citing studies that link heavy online activity to exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and disrupted sleep patterns.
This move follows a similar step in Australia, which this month became the first country to impose a social media ban on children under 16.
The French government aims to limit unrestricted online access for minors and ensure safer digital experiences, emphasizing the importance of protecting young users from potential online harms.
