In a major international development, US President Donald Trump announced that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been captured following a military operation. Speaking in an interview with a US television channel, Trump said he watched the video of Maduro’s capture “live, like a TV show,” alongside military generals in Florida.
According to Trump, Maduro is being transported on a US Navy ship to New York, where he will face charges in Manhattan for drug trafficking and weapons smuggling.
He stated that the operation had been secretly planned since early December. However, Trump added that the question of who will govern Venezuela remains unresolved.
The US president also confirmed that during the operation, some Americans were injured in a helicopter accident.
US media reports indicate that Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were apprehended in their bedroom by American forces. The operation involved US warplanes and Delta Force troops, targeting key locations in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.
In response, Venezuela condemned the attacks as an act of aggression, accusing the US of attempting to seize control of the country’s oil and mineral resources.
