Las Vegas: Former NBA champion Lamar Odom was arrested early Saturday, January 17, on suspicion of driving under the influence, adding another troubling chapter to his well-documented battle with substance abuse.
According to court records, the 46-year-old was driving over 41 miles per hour above the speed limit and cited for improper lane changes, alongside his DUI charge. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in a Nevada court on March 17.
Odom’s struggles with addiction are widely known. In 2013, he entered a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program following a DUI in California, resulting in a plea deal that included three years of probation, an alcohol education program, and fines of around $1,800.
In his 2019 memoir, Darkness to Light, Odom recounted his near-fatal 2015 overdose at a Las Vegas brothel, where a dangerous combination of cocaine, alcohol, and cannabis caused his heart to stop twice.
He suffered multiple seizures, strokes, collapsed lungs, and kidney failure, and was placed on life support before being transferred to a Los Angeles hospital, where he stayed until early 2016.
The former Los Angeles Lakers star, who won two NBA championships, was married to Khloé Kardashian from 2009 to 2016. He has two children, Lamar Jr. and Destiny, with ex-partner Liza Morales. Tragically, his infant son Jayden passed away in 2006 due to sudden infant death syndrome.
