His agent confirmed that the actor passed away recently, while no further details regarding the cause or circumstances of his death were immediately made public.
Born in Edmonton, England, Keating began his acting journey in the late 1960s, taking on a variety of guest roles in British television productions. Early in his career, he appeared in series such as Special Branch, Merry Go Round, Omnibus, The Dragon’s Opponent, and Doctor Who, where he featured in the 1977 story The Sun Makers. His major breakthrough came in 1978 when he was cast as Vila Restal in the BBC science fiction series Blake’s 7. The character, a witty and resourceful petty thief, quickly became one of the most popular figures in the show.
Vila held the unique distinction of being the only character to appear in all 52 episodes of the dystopian space drama, which ran until 1981. His performance earned him lasting recognition among science fiction audiences and cemented his place in cult television history.
Beyond Blake’s 7, Keating’s career continued to span decades across multiple genres. He appeared in well-known British television productions including Yes Minister, Casualty, Micro Men, and Midsomer Murders, showcasing his adaptability in both comedic and dramatic roles.
In 2005, he joined the cast of the long-running soap opera EastEnders, where he played Reverend George Stevens, the vicar of Walford. His character became a familiar presence in the community, appearing across 54 episodes until 2017.
During his time on the show, Reverend Stevens was involved in several key life events within the storyline, including weddings, christenings, funerals, and emotional community moments. His final appearance saw the character announcing retirement and preparing to move to Australia to live with his daughter.
Alongside his television work, Keating maintained an active career in audio productions, particularly with Big Finish, where he reprised his role as Vila Restal in several Blake’s 7 audio dramas.
His continued association with the character decades after the original series ended reflected both his enduring popularity and the strong fan following of the show.
