FIFA World Cup: Egypt beat Australia on penalties to reach last 16

Australia equalized in 54th minute with own goal by Mohamed Hany.

Egypt stayed calm in a tightly contested FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match to eliminate Australia 4-2 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 at Dallas Stadium in Arlington.

Egypt’s first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match set up a Round of 16 meeting with either Argentina or Cape Verde in Atlanta on Tuesday. Argentina will face Cape Verde in Miami later on Friday.

Defender Harry Souttar took Australia’s first penalty but missed, leaning back and shooting well over the crossbar.

Lucas Herrington hit the crossbar on Australia’s fourth attempt, sending his penalty too high toward the top-right corner. Hossam Abdelmaguid then scored his penalty into the left corner to seal Egypt’s first World Cup knockout win and send them into the last 16.

Egypt started strongly and took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour. Mohamed Salah took a short free kick to Ashour, whose shot was blocked.

The ball was not cleared properly and was crossed back into the box, where Ashour was waiting at the back post to head it in.

Australia equalized in the 54th minute with an own goal by Mohamed Hany.

A free kick from the left was flicked in. It initially appeared as if Harry Souttar had scored, but the final touch came off Egypt defender Hany.

It was Hany’s second own goal of the tournament.

Hany required treatment on his knee in the first half and also survived a worrying moment early in the second half when he collided in the air with Connor Metcalfe near Egypt’s goal. He fell to the ground, and teammates immediately called for medical assistance.

Trainers brought a stretcher, but after Hany stood up and passed a concussion check, he was allowed to continue playing.
