LAHORE: The Punjab Drug Regulatory Authority (PDRA) has ordered the withdrawal of certain batches of popular skin whitening creams after tests found traces of banned mercury in the products.
The authority said the presence of mercury in beauty creams could pose serious health risks. Mercury is a toxic substance that can enter the body through the skin and may damage vital organs, including the kidneys.
Health experts have warned that long term use of products containing mercury can lead to serious health problems.
The PDRA also announced action against five homeopathic medicines after tests found that they contained ingredients used in allopathic medicines.
Authorities said action was taken against the medicines and their manufacturers after confirming the presence of undeclared ingredients.
The move comes as Pakistan’s beauty, skincare and wellness industries continue to seek government support. Earlier, the federal government introduced tax relief measures for these sectors to encourage business growth.
Industry representatives had requested lower taxes, saying high costs have affected business operations and limited expansion opportunities.
Owners of beauty salons, skincare centres, gyms and wellness businesses said reducing taxes could help companies grow, create jobs and attract more investment.
Industry stakeholders also highlighted challenges faced by small businesses due to rising expenses, including rent, electricity bills, equipment costs and employee salaries.
They have called for reductions in sales tax and other charges, saying lower taxes could make services more affordable for consumers and support overall economic activity.
