Capt. Safdar’s Arrest Case: IG, AIG Special Branch Apply For Leaves

Top police officials, including Inspector General (IG) Additional IG Sindh, have decided to go on leaves over the issue of the arrest Captain (retd) Safdar.

Additional Inspector General (AIG) Special Branch of Sindh Police Imran Yaqub Minhas has applied for two months leave for undue interference in the arrest of Capt (retd) Safdar.

Imran Yaqub Minhas’s written request to Inspector General (IG) Sindh Police said that the recent registration of a case against Captain (retd) Safdar unduly interfered within the work and the police faced humiliation. This has made the police officers and employees demoralized and shocked.

“In this environment of pressure, it is difficult to perform professional duties and I need 60 days off to get out of this pressure,” he said.

Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had announced the formation of a ministerial inquiry committee to probe the arrest of PML-N leader Capt (retd) Safdar.

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah, while addressing a media conference at CM House in Karachi, said a ministerial committee will be formed to probe the circumstances surrounding the arrest of retired Captain Safdar.

“We are forming a ministerial committee to probe the incident. The names have not been finalized but there will be three to five ministers,” said Shah.

It may be recalled that Captain (R) Safdar was arrested in the case of violating the sanctity of Mazar-e-Quaid. Captain (R) Safdar was arrested from a private hotel.  PML-N leader Capt. Safdar addressed the supporters in Quaid-e-Azam’s mausoleum with his shoes on.

He was produced before City court after he was arrested by police for violating the sanctity of Mazar-e-Quaid after which he was granted bail.

It may be recalled that PML-N vice-president Maryam Nawaz had said on Twitter on Monday morning that the police broke down the door of the hotel room in Karachi where they were staying and Captain (R) Muhammad Safdar arrested.

Police have registered a case against PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz, her husband Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar and 200 others for allegedly violating the sanctity of shrine of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

The case was registered against PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, her husband Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar and 200 other unidentified persons under Sections 6, 8 and 10 of the Quaid-e-Azam Shrine Protection and Maintenance Ordinance 1971 and Section 506 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

In the FIR, the plaintiff had claimed that Capt. (R) Safdar and his 200 accomplices had violated the sanctity of Mazar-e-Quaid, desecrated the grave, made death threats and vandalized government property.

However, on Monday, Judicial Magistrate Eastern Minister Hussain Memon had granted bail to Capt (retd) Safdar on a bond of Rs 100,000.

It may be recalled that PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz and other leaders had reached Karachi on October 18 to attend a meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), an alliance of opposition parties.

Before attending the rally at Bagh-e-Jinnah, the leaders and workers attended Mazar-e-Quaid and offered Fateha. Maryam Nawaz and other PML-N leaders remained silent but Captain (R) started chanting slogans and the mob also reacted emotionally.

This situation continued for a few moments after which Maryam Nawaz and others left the premises.
