The residents of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) have gone to the polls today to elect new members of the region’s Legislative Assembly.

AJK has a total of 32,50,117 registered voters, including 17,8,800 male and 14,68,317 female.

There are 33 electoral constituencies in the ten districts of AJK. While 12 constituencies are kept for Pakistan-based Jammu & Kashmir refugees. Polling stands in all the provinces have been set up for the refugees.

A total of 691 candidates, including 381 belonging to a total of 32 registered political parties and a total of 310 independent candidates, are in the run to win the election for 45 seats.

AJK Elections 2021: Polling For The Legislative Assembly Ends

Polling for the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly has ended.

5129 polling stations were formed for 3.2 million registered voters out of which 826 were proclaimed most sensitive and 1209 as sensitive implementing additional forces, stated the Election Commission.

Polling started at 08:00 am continued till 05:00 pm without any break. The ECP has further stated the voters who are on the grounds of the polling stations can cast their votes.

Voting Underway Amidst Violence, Killings

Polling is underway in Azad Kashmir for the 11th general election to the Legislative Assembly. Direct elections are taking place for 45 seats in the 53-member Legislative Assembly,.of these, 12 seats are reserved for Kashmiri refugees residing in Pakistan for whom polling is underway in various cities of Pakistan.

Five of the eight seats are reserved for women, while one seat is reserved for technocrats, clerics and overseas Kashmiris. The schedule of indirect elections for these seats will be announced separately.

This is the first election in Azad Kashmir since India ended its autonomous status of Kashmir. That is why the opposition parties in Pakistan, including the ruling PTI, are also very active in the elections.

A police party was attacked by political party workers at polling station No. 54 in LA-32 Dhal Chattian Azad Kashmir.

SP Riaz Mughal said that the attack on the police party took place at the women’s polling station, preventing the workers of the political party from entering the women’s polling station.

He said that 5 policemen were injured in the attack of political party workers. The workers attacked the police with sticks.

Two Killed As Rival Political Parties Clash In Kotli

Two men were shot dead in a clash between two political parties in Kotli during the Azad Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections.

According to SSP Raja Muhammad Akmal Khan, a clash broke out between the workers of two political parties in the LA-12 Charhoi constituency of Kotli in which one worker was killed and three others were injured in the firing.

Raja Muhammad Akmal Khan said that the youth killed during the clash was identified as Zaheer and further investigation into the incident has been started.

Police officials said that a heavy contingent of police has been deployed in the area after the incident and the situation in the area is under complete control. The polling process is also going on uninterrupted.

AJK Elections 2021: Ground Set For 11th General Elections In Azad Kashmir

The ground has been set for the 11th general elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) here on Sunday, July 25th.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), polling in Azad Kashmir will continue till 5 pm without any break.

Earlier, the general elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir were mainly contested by local leaders of the contesting parties.

In the 2006 general elections, the Jamaat-e-All Jammu and Kashmir Muslim Conference (AJKMC) competed with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for power in Muzaffarabad.

Five years later, in the general election, the other contestants were the PPP and the PML-N, contesting seven months before the election, while the Azad Jammu Party was third.
