According to the Palestinian health ministry, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian man amid clashes that erupted on Thursday during the funeral of a 12-year-old Palestinian child who had been assassinated by soldiers the day before.

Shawkat Khalid Awad, 20, was killed in Beit Ummar by gunshot wounds to the head and stomach, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Palestinians attending the funeral of Mohammed al-Alami, a 12-year-old Palestinian child killed the day before in the occupied West Bank, were subjected to tear gas, rubber-coated bullets, and shock grenades shot by Israeli forces.

Alami died on Wednesday in the occupied West Bank village of Beit Ummar, northwest of Hebron, after being shot by Israeli troops while riding in a car with his father.

On Thursday, a procession accompanied the boy’s coffin through the streets of Beit Ummar, where he was buried, draped in the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party’s flag.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, Israeli forces shot and killed a 20-year-old Palestinian male. The man identified as Shaukat Awad was shot in the head and abdomen during the confrontations in Beit Ummar.

Later, hundreds of Palestinians threw stones at Israeli soldiers who responded by firing tear gas, an AFP correspondent said.

Israel probing the shooting

The father was traveling with his son and daughter when Mohammed requested him to stop at a shop to buy something, according to Nasri Sabarneh, the town’s mayor.

According to the mayor, the father did a U-turn, and Israeli forces nearby began shouting at him to stop. After then, a soldier opened fire on the car, killing the youngster in the chest.

“They took my heart from me, they snatched it from me,” the boy’s father told Haaretz.

Earlier, the Israeli military said it launched an investigation into Wednesday’s deadly shooting of the boy.

Senior commanding officers and military police, which investigate alleged soldier misconduct, were also investigating the event, according to a military statement. Soldiers fired at a car that failed to halt at a checkpoint after firing warning bullets, according to the report.

After the vehicle failed to stop, one of the troops shot at the vehicle’s wheels to bring it to a halt, according to the army.

“We are looking into the claim that a Palestinian minor was killed as a result of the gunfire,” it said, adding the incident was being reviewed by senior commanding officers.

After 17-year-old Mohammed Munir al-Tamimi died on Saturday from gunshot wounds sustained the day before in the Palestinian town of Beita, Alami became the second teenage Palestinian murdered by Israeli fire in days.

A 41-year-old Palestinian was also shot and killed late Tuesday in Beita, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
