On Sunday, a dormant volcano on a small Spanish island off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean erupted. A solitary residence on the island of La Palma has been dubbed a “miracle house” after narrowly avoided being consumed by lava.

On the Island of La Palma, in Tacande, Spain, a volcanic explosion caused damage to green cover and people’s homes for the first time in 50 years. Surprisingly, just one home survived as massive amounts of lava rushed across residential neighborhoods, consuming everything in a black mass. Images of the so-called “miracle home” have already gone viral.

Dramatic footage and photographs that showed the magnitude of the volcanic explosion and its aftermath, which forced hundreds of people to flee the island, went viral earlier this week. Drone pictures showed only one white house with a brown roof standing tall amongst the burned surroundings as molten lava continued to surge from the cracks of Cumbre Vieja.

According to the media, the property unaffected by the lava belongs to a retired Danish couple who had not visited the island since the epidemic began but were emotional to see their home not destroyed by the volcano.

When she saw the images of their home surrounded by lava spreading on social media, Ada Monnikendam, who constructed the house with her husband, said she was stunned, Ada told the media, “We all started crying like crazy when I told them that their beloved house was intact.”

She continued “They told me, ‘Even though we can’t go now, we’re relieved that it’s still standing. We’ll enjoy it in a while, or we’ll leave it to our three children.’”

The Associated Press said that large explosions continued to be heard from the exploding volcano on Friday as ash poured into the air. La Palma is part of the Canary Islands archipelago, which lies off the coast of northwest Africa.

Despite the fact that lava has slowed substantially, there is concern that the molten mass may continue to descend in the following days, eventually spilling into the sea.

According to the media, the government of the Canary Islands has announced intentions to purchase two housing projects for individuals who have been displaced. Following the tragedy, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez flew directly from La Palma to New York for a brief visit to address the United Nations General Assembly before returning to the Canary Islands to oversee relief efforts.
