Troy Kotsur is only the second deaf actor to receive an Oscar Award. At the 94th Academy Awards, he was named Best Supporting Actor. For his role in CODA, he was nominated. The audience gave Troy a standing ovation and cheered him on in sign language as he walked up to the stage to accept the award.
When the winner’s name was announced, the audience erupted in applause. The footage of the actor accepting the prize on stage, as well as the audience’s reaction, has gone viral.
Youn Yuh-Jung, who won Best Actress in a Supporting Role at the Oscars in 2021, presented the award. She signed the actor, “Congrats, I love you,” when she declared Troy the winner. It was a truly heartwarming moment!
Troy Kotsur congratulated his family and the CODA team after receiving the prize. His prize was also dedicated to the deaf, disabled, and CODA community. “This is our moment,” he continued.
Marlee Matlin, his CODA co-star, was the first deaf actress to receive an Academy Award. In 1987, she received Best Actress for her role in Children of a Lesser God.
