GLASGOW: After a backlash from fans, Rangers have withdrew from a friendly tournament in Australia in which they were set to meet Celtic for the first time outside of Glasgow.

During the domestic football hiatus caused by the World Cup, the Scottish giants were scheduled to play in the Sydney Super Cup in November.

“Rangers can confirm the club will not be participating in the Sydney Super Cup in November 2022,” the Scottish champions said in a statement.

“After it became clear the tournament organisers were unwilling to fulfil their commitments to Rangers, we have, with immediate effect, terminated the club’s agreement with the organisers.”

The club is said to have had reservations about its business agreement.

Celtic and Rangers fans were enraged by the trip, accusing both clubs’ boards of commercialising the rivalry of the Old Firm match.

Rangers supporters were further enraged by promotional material for the competition that focused on Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou’s “homecoming.”

Rangers’ 2-1 triumph over Dundee earlier this month was overshadowed by multiple stoppages in play as fans protested by throwing tennis balls onto the pitch.

Before the Old Firm match on November 20, Ranger’s were set to play Western Sydney Wanderers, and Celtic were supposed to face Sydney FC.
