Search ongoing for Carnival Mardi Gras passenger who jumped off Florida

The Carnival Mardi Gras’s male passenger leapt overboard early Saturday morning, the cruise line and Coast Guard reported to USA TODAY. The ship was making its way back to its home port at Port Canaveral, in Orlando, Florida.

The individual leaped off the ship while it was still around 55 miles east of Port Canaveral, according to David Micallef, a Coast Guard spokesman.

He stated that the Mardi Gras and another Carnival ship, the Elation, immediately began looking. To continue the search, the Coast Guard brought in two cutters, the Heron and Ibis, as well as fixed-wing aircraft. Saturday afternoon, everything was still in progress.

“The ship’s crew assisted in search and rescue operations until the vessel was released by the United States Coast Guard, which is continuing the search.
