Certain stores are restricting the number of cooking oil consumers may purchase due to the Ukraine war’s impact on supplies.

Tesco allows customers to purchase three things. Waitrose and Morrisons have imposed a two-item restriction on consumers.

The bulk of sunflower oil imported into the UK originates from Ukraine, and disruptions in supplies have resulted in some shortages and an increase in demand for substitutes.

According to the British Retail Consortium, the limits are transitory in nature and are intended to “ensure availability for everyone.”

Olive, rapeseed, and sunflower oils are included in certain supermarkets’ restrictions, both in-store and online.

Iceland has not yet responded to social media images of signs up in its stores restricting sales of two-liter and five-liter bottles of sunflower oil to one per client.

Meanwhile, a Waitrose representative stated, “We are actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with our suppliers to ensure that consumers continue to have a choice of cooking oils.”

Additionally, according to retail research agency Assosia, the reduced supply of sunflower oil as a result of the Ukraine crisis is affecting pricing.

It examined variations in the average price of sunflower oil at major stores such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, and Lidl.

According to its research, the average price of a one-liter bottle of own-brand sunflower oil has increased by more than 10% since January 2022, from 12p to £1.26.

The increase was 38p or 6% for a five-liter bottle. The average price of a liter of own-brand organic sunflower oil remained unchanged at £3.10.

Concerns over supply have also been expressed by UK food makers that use sunflower oil as a component in their goods, such as crisps and oven chips.

The Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland have informed customers that some items labeled as having sunflower oil may really include other oils such as rapeseed oil, in an effort to ensure the continued availability of products.

They advised anyone with sensitivities to keep an eye out for more information.
