Following claims of misconduct, Showtime and Paramount Television Studios are said to have terminated ties with “Ray Donovan” showrunner Hollander.
Following claims of wrongdoing, longtime Showtime showrunner David Hollander has been fired from his upcoming series “American Gigolo.”
According to Deadline, the “American Gigolo” TV adaption for Showtime, which is produced by Paramount Television Studios, has parted ties with the creator, director, executive producer, and showrunner.
“David Hollander is no longer on the drama series ‘American Gigolo’ and Paramount Television Studios no longer has a producing relationship with him,” a spokesperson told Deadline in a statement.
Hollander was fired, according to various individuals close to production, after a probe into charges of wrongdoing that were apparently unrelated to sexual harassment. Co-executive producer David Bar Katz, who worked with Hollander on Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” is expected to take over as showrunner for “American Gigolo.”
Julian Kaye, a male escort who was arrested for murder, is played by Jon Bernthal in “American Gigolo.” The story picks up 15 years after Kaye’s conviction and subsequent prison sentence, with the protagonist trying to figure out what really happened and why he was set up. Kaye also tries to rekindle his romance with Gretchen Mol’s character Michelle. The series is based on the 1980 film directed by Paul Schrader and starring Richard Gere. In addition to Rosie O’Donnell, Lizzie Brocheré, Wayne Brady, and Leland Orser, the film stars Rosie O’Donnell, Lizzie Brocheré, Wayne Brady, and Leland Orser.
The pilot for the new series, which is produced by Paramount TV Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television, was written and directed by Hollander. Hollander was let go after filming seven episodes of the 10-episode series.
Hollander is most known for executive producing and serving as showrunner for the long-running Showtime drama “Ray Donovan,” for which he was nominated for an Emmy and won a WGA Award for Best New Series. Following the end of the series last year, he co-wrote and directed the “Ray Donovan” film. “Heartland” and “The Guardian,” both of which Hollander executive produced and directed many episodes, are two of his past TV projects.
Bernthal previously told GQ that being cast in the lead role for the upcoming series “American Gigolo” astonished him.
“I do not believe that I possess any kind of natural sex appeal,” Bernthal said. “I’ve always looked at myself as this weird-looking guy.”
The “We Own This City” star continued, “It’s crazy to me, but it scares me — and that’s why I’m gonna see it through.”
