The Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) is also threatening industrial action but over pay.

The cost of living crisis has triggered a slew of requests in the private sector for salary increases to keep pace with inflation, which is presently running at 9%.

Unions are also opposing any cost-cutting initiatives that could affect their respective memberships.

The CWU, which represents 115,000 postal workers at Royal Mail, has led strikes at so-called royal Post Offices in recent months and is also balloting workers at BT in a fight over pay.

It charges Royal Mail with profiteering at the expense of its customers.
