In accordance with a federal judge’s order, John Hinckley, who wounded then-US President Ronald Reagan and three people in a 1981 assassination attempt, was released without conditions on Wednesday.

After 30 years in a psychiatric hospital in Washington, he was granted full-time conditional release in 2016 and lived with his mother in Virginia until her death last year.

In his 1982 trial, a jury ruled him not guilty due to insanity, causing Congress and certain states to establish laws banning the use of insanity as a defense.

“FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 41 YEARS, 2 MONTHS, AND 15 DAYS, FREEDOM!!!” On Wednesday afternoon, Hinckley, 67, wrote on his Twitter account.

Judge Paul Friedman of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia determined in September that Hinckley was “mentally stable,” that he had followed the terms of his conditional release, which limited his travel and internet use, and that he should be allowed unconditional parole.

Hinckley’s doctors informed the court that the chances of his committing violence were slim, and federal prosecutors agreed. Patti Davis, Reagan’s daughter, opposed Hinckley’s release, claiming that he was a narcissist who did not feel remorse.

During surgery for a punctured lung following Hinckley’s attack outside a Washington hotel, Reagan recovered rapidly, but his press secretary Jim Brady was permanently disabled. The first of Hinckley’s six shots struck Brady’s head, fracturing his brain cavity.

Brady and his wife, Sarah Brady, founded the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence in the aftermath of the attack, which helped fuel modern attempts to tighten gun restrictions.

Following the filming, it was widely believed that Hinckley had developed a crush on Jodie Foster and was attempting to impress the “Taxi Driver” star.

A medical examiner classified Jim Brady’s death a homicide from the shooting more than two decades earlier shortly after his death in 2014.

Hinckley has been creating songs and uploading recordings online, but his upcoming show at the Market Hotel in New York City was postponed on Wednesday after the venue got a flurry of deadly threats.
